The water trap holds the condensate that forms as humidified gas cools in the circuit, keeping it in a drainable reservoir rather than allowing it to collect in the limbs during a long case. It is used in the operating room on adult patients undergoing general anaesthesia, and is chosen over the Basic set where case length or humidification makes condensate likely.
