The NovaStar plus oronasal mask covers the nose and mouth and is used to deliver non-invasive ventilation to adult patients. It is fitted with an anti-asphyxia valve that opens to room air if ventilator flow stops, so the patient can breathe through the mask under a loss-of-flow condition. This unit is size XL and, unlike the ClassicStar range, it is reusable, so it is cleaned and reprocessed between patients rather than discarded.
It is used in intensive care on adult patients receiving non-invasive support, including hypercapnic and hypoxaemic respiratory failure and support after extubation. A full-face interface is generally preferred over a nasal mask where the patient mouth-breathes or where higher pressures would cause excessive oral leak.
The mask attaches to NovaStar plus headgear, which is ordered separately, and the mask body must be reprocessed according to the manufacturer's instructions between patients.
