The HI-Flow Star nasal cannula is the patient interface for high-flow nasal oxygen therapy. Warmed and humidified gas is delivered through the prongs at flows up to 60 litres per minute, with the cannula sized so that a deliberate leak is maintained around the nares rather than a seal. This item is the adult large prong size; prong size is chosen against the patient's nostril diameter, and an oversized prong that occludes the nares is avoided because the therapy depends on an open nasal airway.
It is used in intensive care for adult patients on high-flow oxygen, including hypoxaemic respiratory failure, post-extubation support and preoxygenation. The cannula is listed against the Dräger Evita V600 and Evita V800 ventilators and Pulmovista 500 when configured for high-flow therapy.
