3M Unitek Single-Ended Ligature Director, Serrated Tip
A single-ended stainless steel instrument with a small, thin, serrated tip used to tuck ligature wire pigtails into place.
The 3M Unitek Single-Ended Ligature Director is a chairside hand instrument made from stainless steel, designed with a small, thin, serrated tip at one end for tucking in ligature wire pigtails after a bracket has been tied. When an orthodontist secures a bracket with wire ligature rather than an elastomeric tie, the twisted end of the wire, known as the pigtail, needs to be folded neatly against the bracket so it does not irritate the patient's cheek or lip.
A dedicated instrument like this makes that final step quicker and gives better control than trying to tuck the pigtail with a general purpose plier. Being single-ended, it offers one working tip rather than a second function at the opposite handle, keeping the design simple and lightweight for repeated chairside use.
As a reusable stainless steel instrument, it is sterilised and used across many patients rather than discarded after a single procedure.
