3M Unitek Seating Lugs for Orthodontic Bands

Unitek Seating Lugs are small metal attachments used on orthodontic bands to give the clinician or assistant a defined point of contact for a band seating instrument during the banding stage of fixed appliance treatment. Rather than pressing directly on the smooth edge of a band, which can risk the seating instrument slipping off during firm pressure, a lug provides a raised, purpose-built contact point that the instrument's tip can engage more securely.
This supports a more controlled and even seating of the band onto the tooth, reducing the chance of the band seating unevenly or the operator needing multiple attempts to get it fully home. Seating lugs are typically incorporated onto bands during manufacture or added by a lab as part of band preparation, and they work alongside standard band seating instruments and pushers already used in the banding workflow.
Practices banding molars or other teeth as part of their fixed appliance protocol rely on features like seating lugs as one of several small design details that make the banding step faster and more predictable, particularly on teeth where access is limited and a secure instrument grip matters more.
