3M Molar Band Seater, Serrated Triangular Tip
A molar band seating instrument with a hardened cobalt alloy tip and molded handle, giving a firm grip and good interproximal access for banding.
The Molar Band Seater is a hand instrument used at the banding stage of orthodontic treatment to drive a preformed molar band fully into place before it is cemented. Its working end is a hardened, cobalt based alloy tip embedded into a molded handle, a construction that also lets the instrument double as a bite stick, meaning the patient can bite down on it to help seat the band using their own occlusal force alongside the clinician's manual pressure.
The tip itself is serrated and triangular in shape, a design intended to give better access into the tight interproximal spaces around a molar while still providing a positive, non-slip grip against the band during seating. Getting a molar band fully and evenly seated before cementation is important for how well the band fits and how long it stays in place through the following months of treatment, so a dependable seating instrument is a standard part of the banding tray alongside the bands themselves and a matching band pusher.
This instrument is used repeatedly across banding appointments and, being a durable metal hand tool, is reprocessed between patients rather than replaced as a consumable.
