3M AlastiK Lingual Ligatures are elastomeric ties made specifically to work with the 3M Incognito Appliance System, a custom lingual orthodontic appliance bonded to the back surface of the teeth. Lingual brackets are harder to access than conventional labial brackets, so a ligature designed with this system in mind helps the orthodontist secure the archwire into each bracket slot quickly and reliably despite the more restricted working angle.
Using a matched ligature rather than a generic elastomeric tie is intended to make routine adjustment appointments faster for both clinician and patient, an important consideration given how many ligatures are placed and replaced over a course of lingual treatment. As a single-use consumable, these ligatures are discarded once removed and replaced with fresh ones at the next adjustment visit.
