Sklar Wallich Placenta Scoop, 21mm
A 16-1/2 inch placenta scoop with a 21mm curette end, used to remove retained placental tissue from the uterus following delivery.
The Sklar Wallich Placenta Scoop is used in obstetrics to remove retained products of conception or placental tissue from the uterine cavity following delivery. Its long sixteen and a half inch shaft allows the obstetrician to reach the uterine cavity through the vaginal canal, and the twenty one millimetre scoop end is shaped to gently curette the uterine lining and collect retained tissue without excessive trauma to the surrounding uterine wall.
This instrument is used on labour and delivery units and in obstetric operating theatres whenever a manual or instrumental removal of retained placenta is required, a situation that can arise after both vaginal and caesarean deliveries. Obstetricians are the primary users, typically performing the procedure under appropriate anaesthesia or analgesia given the sensitivity of the uterine cavity.
As a reusable stainless steel instrument, it undergoes the maternity unit's standard decontamination and steam sterilization cycle between uses, the same as other obstetric surgical instruments.
