Sklar Merit Explorer #3, Double Ended
A double ended dental explorer, pattern #3, used to probe tooth surfaces and detect decay, calculus and defective restoration margins.
The Sklar Merit Explorer #3 is a diagnostic hand instrument used by dentists and hygienists to examine tooth surfaces for early signs of decay, rough or soft spots in enamel, calculus deposits and defects at the margins of existing restorations. Being double ended, it presents two different tip shapes on the same handle, letting the clinician switch between them without reaching for a second instrument during an examination.
Explorers of this general type are used in nearly every routine dental check up as well as during more detailed restorative and periodontal assessments, making them one of the most heavily used tools in a general dental practice. The fine, pointed tips allow the operator to feel subtle surface changes that are not always visible to the eye, supporting earlier detection of problems before they progress.
Made from stainless steel, the instrument holds its point through repeated use and withstands standard autoclave sterilisation between patients. It is a routine item in diagnostic and general dental instrument trays across dental clinics.
