Sklar Merit Cast Spreader, 3-Prong, 9 in
A Sklar Merit cast spreader, 3 prong, 9 inches long, used to gently spread apart the cut edges of a plaster cast before it is fully removed from a patient.
Once a plaster or fibreglass cast has been cut lengthwise with a cast saw or plaster shears, the two halves still need to be prised apart enough to remove the cast without pinching or catching the underlying skin, and this is where a cast spreader is used. This Sklar Merit version has a 3 prong design and measures 9 inches, giving the clinician a mechanism to lever the cut edges apart in a controlled, gradual motion rather than pulling directly with fingers or a flat tool.
It is used in orthopedic clinics, casting rooms and emergency departments by nurses, orthopedic technicians and physicians as the final step in the cast removal process, working alongside a cast saw or shears used earlier to make the initial cut. The 3 prong configuration is designed to distribute the spreading force evenly along the cut edge rather than at a single point.
It should be cleaned and sterilised between patients following standard clinical instrument reprocessing protocols.
