Sklar Doyen Adult Rib Rasp Elevator, Right
A right-handed rib rasp and elevator used to strip periosteum from the surface of a rib during thoracic and cardiac surgical procedures.
The Sklar Doyen Rib Rasp Elevator is used in thoracic surgery to separate the periosteum, the fibrous membrane covering the bone, from the rib before the rib is divided or removed, and to smooth the cut edge of bone afterwards. Its working end combines a rasping surface for scraping periosteum away with an elevator edge for lifting it cleanly from the underlying bone, reducing bleeding and tissue trauma compared with blunt dissection alone.
This is the right hand version of the pattern, complementing a left hand instrument so a surgical team can work from either side of the rib depending on the approach and the surgeon's preference. At nine and a half inches long, it gives enough reach to work within the chest wall during thoracotomy and similar procedures.
Instruments of this kind are used by thoracic and cardiac surgeons and their assistants, and are typically supplied and reprocessed as a stainless steel item that can withstand repeated sterilisation cycles in a hospital setting.
