Sklar Benson Pylorus Separator, 5-3/4 Inch
A 5-3/4 inch surgical instrument used to bluntly spread and separate pyloric muscle fibers during pyloromyotomy procedures in infants.
The Sklar Benson Pylorus Separator is a specialized surgical instrument used during pyloromyotomy, a procedure most often performed in infants with pyloric stenosis, where the thickened circular muscle of the pylorus needs to be split without cutting through the underlying mucosa. Measuring 5-3/4 inches, it is designed to be inserted into a small incision made in the outer muscle layer and then gently spread apart, bluntly separating the muscle fibers along their length while leaving the inner lining intact.
This blunt separation technique is safer than continued cutting once the muscle layer has been opened, reducing the risk of perforating the delicate mucosal lining beneath. Pediatric general surgeons rely on an instrument of this specific shape and size for this single, well defined step in an otherwise standardized operation.
It is typically used alongside a scalpel or other cutting instrument that makes the initial incision into the muscle. As with other Sklar surgical instruments, it is manufactured for repeated clinical use with standard hospital sterilization between cases, and is a standard fixture in pediatric general surgery trays.
