Sklar Becker Cystotome, Malleable
A malleable ophthalmic cystotome used to puncture and open the anterior lens capsule as part of cataract extraction surgery.
The Sklar Becker Cystotome is a fine ophthalmic instrument used to create an opening in the anterior capsule of the lens, a step known as capsulotomy that is performed early in cataract surgery to gain access to the lens material for removal. Its malleable construction allows the surgeon to bend the tip to a preferred angle or curvature before use, tailoring the instrument to the specific approach and anatomy of each case rather than relying on a single fixed shape.
This flexibility is valued in anterior segment surgery, where the angle of approach to the capsule can vary with the surgeon's technique and the patient's eye. The cystotome is typically used before phacoemulsification or manual extraction begins, working alongside other capsulotomy and lens handling instruments in the surgical set.
As with other fine ophthalmic tools in the Sklar range, it is manufactured to close tolerances for microsurgical work and is intended for repeated clinical use with the sterilization protocols used for eye surgery instruments. Cataract surgery practices commonly keep a malleable cystotome on hand as a standard capsulotomy tool.
