Sklar Barr Fistula Probe, 8 Inch Sterling Shaft
An 11-1/2 inch fistula probe with an 8 inch sterling shaft and eye, used to trace the course of a fistula tract during colorectal surgery.
The Sklar Barr Fistula Probe is a colorectal surgical instrument with an overall length of 11-1/2 inches and an 8 inch sterling silver shaft fitted with an eye, used to trace the course of a fistula tract from its external opening to its internal opening during fistula surgery. The probe is passed gently along the tract to define its path before the surgeon proceeds with laying open, excising, or otherwise treating the fistula, and the eye at the tip allows a suture or seton to be threaded through if the surgical plan calls for placing one along the tract.
Accurately mapping a fistula's course is an important step in anorectal fistula surgery, since misjudging the path can risk injury to the anal sphincter or lead to incomplete treatment. This probe is used by colorectal surgeons and general surgeons performing anal fistula procedures, and is kept as part of a dedicated colorectal or anorectal surgery instrument set, reprocessed between cases following standard sterilization protocols.
