Rectal Speculum for Anorectal Examination
A rectal speculum used to visualize the anal canal and lower rectum during clinical examination, supporting diagnosis of anorectal conditions.
A rectal speculum is a diagnostic instrument used to gently open and hold the anal canal so the clinician can visualise the lower rectum and surrounding tissue during an examination. By providing this clear view, the speculum supports the diagnosis and assessment of a range of anorectal conditions, including hemorrhoids, fissures, polyps and other abnormalities that may not be identifiable through external examination alone.
Its design allows controlled opening once inserted, giving the clinician the working space needed to inspect the area thoroughly or to perform a minor procedure, such as taking a biopsy or applying treatment directly to an identified lesion. Rectal specula are used across general surgery, gastroenterology, colorectal surgery and general practice wherever an anorectal examination forms part of routine patient assessment or investigation of specific symptoms.
As a reusable stainless steel instrument, it must be thoroughly cleaned and sterilized between patients given its direct use within a body cavity, following standard infection control protocols applied to all instruments used in similar examinations. It is a standard item on colorectal and general surgery outpatient instrument trays in hospitals and clinics.
