Fetoscope, Non-Electronic Obstetric Listening Device
A basic obstetric listening device used to hear a fetal heartbeat directly, without batteries or electronics, during routine antenatal examinations. It is used by healthcare providers across the UAE and GCC.
The Fetoscope is a simple, non-electronic instrument used to listen to a fetal heartbeat during pregnancy, offering a low cost, dependable alternative to electronic Doppler devices for basic antenatal monitoring. It works purely through acoustic transmission, allowing a midwife or obstetric clinician to place the device against the mother's abdomen and listen directly for the rhythmic sound of the fetal heart, a technique that has been used in obstetric care for generations and remains a valued skill in many maternity settings.
Because it has no batteries, electronics or moving parts to fail, a fetoscope is extremely reliable and requires essentially no maintenance beyond basic cleaning between uses, making it a practical backup even in clinics that primarily rely on electronic monitoring equipment. Its simplicity also makes it a useful teaching tool for training midwives and medical students in the fundamentals of fetal heart auscultation before they move on to more technologically assisted methods.
Fetoscopes are used in antenatal clinics, maternity wards, home birth settings and midwifery training programmes for routine fetal heart checks during pregnancy.
