Bionex Punctum Dilator, Stainless Steel
An autoclavable stainless steel ophthalmic dilator used to gently widen the lacrimal punctum before tear duct irrigation or probing procedures.
The Bionex Punctum Dilator is a fine, tapered stainless steel instrument used in ophthalmology to gently widen the lacrimal punctum, the small opening at the inner corner of the eyelid that drains tears into the tear duct system. Widening this opening slightly is often the first step before irrigating or probing the tear duct, a procedure used to investigate or treat blocked tear ducts and related watery eye complaints.
The instrument's tapered tip is designed to be inserted with gentle, controlled pressure, expanding the punctum just enough to allow a fine cannula or probe to pass through afterwards. Made from stainless steel, it is autoclavable and built to withstand the repeated sterilisation cycles expected of reusable ophthalmic instruments in a clinic or hospital eye department.
Ophthalmologists, optometrists and specialist eye clinic nurses use punctum dilators as a routine part of lacrimal system examination and treatment, particularly in patients presenting with excessive tearing or suspected duct obstruction. As with other reusable stainless steel instruments, it should be cleaned, disinfected and sterilised between patients according to the facility's protocol.
