The 3M Attest Super Rapid Steam Biological Indicator, blue cap, is used to confirm that a steam sterilization cycle has actually killed resistant bacterial spores, rather than simply relying on time and temperature readings from the sterilizer itself. It monitors gravity displacement saturated steam processes run at 270 degrees Fahrenheit or 275 degrees Fahrenheit, and is intended for the shorter three and ten minute exposure cycles common in busy sterile processing departments.
After the cycle finishes, the indicator is placed in the Attest Auto-reader 490 or 490M, which incubates it and reports a final fluorescent result after just 24 minutes rather than the days needed for traditional biological monitoring. This is the FDA cleared, ISO compliant format that sterile processing technicians, infection control staff and central sterile supply departments in hospitals and clinics rely on for routine load release decisions and ongoing sterilizer performance verification, letting instruments move back into circulation with documented confidence.
