Sklar Obwegeser Maxillary Awl, Strongly Curved
A 7 inch maxillary awl from Sklar with a strongly curved tip, used to pass wire through bone during maxillofacial fixation and osteotomy procedures.
The Sklar Obwegeser Maxillary Awl is used in oral and maxillofacial surgery to create a pathway through the maxilla for wire sutures, similar in purpose to its mandibular counterpart but shaped for the upper jaw. The strongly curved tip is designed to follow the more pronounced contours around the maxillary bone, giving the surgeon a controlled path through tissue and bone that would be difficult to achieve with a straighter instrument.
Measuring 7 inches, the awl provides enough length to reach the working area while remaining easy to manoeuvre in the confined space of the oral cavity and midface. Surgeons use awls of this kind during procedures such as fracture fixation, osteotomy stabilisation and other maxillary surgery requiring wire suturing rather than plates and screws.
This is a specialised instrument stocked by maxillofacial and oral surgery departments as part of dedicated wire suturing sets used alongside related mandibular and zygomatic instruments.
