Sklar Kieland Obstetrical Forceps, 15-3/4 Inch
A 15-3/4 inch obstetrical forceps used by obstetricians to guide, rotate and assist delivery of the fetal head during selected vaginal births.
The Sklar Kieland Obstetrical Forceps is a 15-3/4 inch delivery instrument built on the well established Kielland design, historically valued for its ability to rotate the fetal head as well as provide traction, which distinguishes it from forceps intended only for straight pulling assistance. It is applied to the sides of the fetal head during the final stage of labor when additional assistance is needed to complete a vaginal delivery, such as when the fetal head is positioned in a way that benefits from controlled rotation before descent.
Because correct application requires specific training and careful technique to protect both mother and baby, this instrument is used only by obstetricians experienced in operative vaginal delivery, in a hospital setting with appropriate monitoring in place. The 15-3/4 inch length gives the clinician the reach needed to position the blades accurately.
As a reusable stainless steel instrument, it must be thoroughly cleaned and sterilized between deliveries following standard obstetric reprocessing protocols, with the blades and lock checked before each use.
