Olsen-Hegar Needle Holder with Scissors
A combined needle holder and scissors instrument that lets a surgeon grasp and stitch with a needle, then trim suture ends without switching tools, built to support accurate, everyday clinical work.
The Olsen Needle Holder, also known as an Olsen-Hegar needle holder, combines the needle grasping function of a standard needle holder with an integrated pair of scissors built into the same instrument. This design allows the surgeon to hold and pass the suturing needle for stitching, then use the same instrument to trim the suture ends, without reaching for a separate pair of scissors partway through the procedure.
Streamlining the suturing sequence in this way can save time during a procedure and also reduces the number of instrument exchanges, which may lower the risk of a needle being dropped or mishandled during handoffs. The instrument is named for its originators, American surgeon Dr. George Olsen and gynecologist Dr.
Douglas Hegar, and this style of needle holder is a recognized standard in surgical suturing. As a reusable surgical instrument, it should be cleaned and autoclave sterilized between patients. It is used by surgeons across general, gynecological and other surgical specialties wherever efficient suturing is required.
