Children under 8 years of age, or weighing less than 55 pounds, or 25 kilograms, including infants, should be treated using the HeartStart Infant/Child SMART Pads rather than the standard adult pad set. Once fitted, these pads instruct the connected defibrillator to reduce the energy of its shock from 150 joules down to 50 joules, an important safety adjustment reflecting the lower energy requirements appropriate for a smaller patient's body.
To help staff select the correct cartridge quickly during an emergency, the Infant/Child SMART Pads cartridge is clearly marked with an indication of the appropriate patient weight range and features a teddy bear icon, giving a simple, unmistakable visual cue distinct from the adult cartridge. This cartridge is CE certified and is intended for use only with compatible Philips Healthcare equipment.
