Emergency Evacuation Chair for Disabilities
A folding evacuation chair designed to move a person with a disability or limited mobility down stairways safely during a fire or other building emergency.
This evacuation chair is designed for moving a person with a disability or limited mobility, including down a staircase, when a lift cannot be used during a fire or other building emergency. The chair folds down to a compact size for storage between uses, which matters in hospitals, clinics, schools and offices where space near stairwells is limited.
Unfolded, the chair measures 90 by 52 by 132 centimetres, and it folds to 112 by 52 by 20 centimetres for storage, with a packing size of 114 by 53 by 22 centimetres. It weighs 10 kilograms net and 12 kilograms including packaging, and is rated to carry a load of up to 159 kilograms. Facilities staff, first aiders and fire wardens are typically the ones trained to operate this type of chair, and it is generally kept mounted or stored near a stairwell so it can be reached quickly.
Regular checks of the straps and wheels are part of keeping an evacuation chair ready for use.
